| The League
of Women Voters of the City of New York is a nonpartisan organization
whose purpose is to promote informed and active citizen participation
in government . It neither supports nor opposes candidates or
political parties. Membership is open to all women and men who
subscribe to its purpose. The League is supported by membership
dues and contributions from public-spirited individuals, businesses and organizations.
The League
maintains a Telephone Information Service, and publishes many citizen
and voter information guides. These include They Represent You,
a directory of the city, state and federal legislators who represent
New York residents. |
History

The League
of Women Voters of the City of New York was founded June 2, 1919,
as an outgrowth of the Women's Suffrage movement. Since then we
have assisted citizens in exercising their political rights. The
League believes that democracy depends on the informed and active
participation of its citizens. The League is committed to empowering
citizens with the meaningful information needed to make sound
decisions for our democracy.
