Stop the Stupak-Pitts Amendment
We are asking you to send letters to your representatives and senators urging them to reject the unacceptable language of the Stupak-Pitts amendment from the final version of the health care reform bill.
As you probably know, the Stupak-Pitts amendment will effectively prohibit private insurance companies offering coverage through the proposed federal health care exchange from covering abortion services, even for women buying insurance with their own money. This dangerous and drastic change to existing law would force insurance companies that currently provide abortion coverage to choose between continuing that coverage or dropping it for all women if they want to participate in health insurance exchanges.
The Stupak amendment isn't just about banning federal funds for abortion. This isn't the Hyde amendment which bans taxpayers from funding abortion. This goes beyond that -- further than current federal law. It threatens women's health and is very bad policy.
Please note: Please include thanks to Senator Gillibrand for her public stand against the Stupak-Pitts amendment and, for constituents of Congressmember Jerry Nadler, please thank him for speaking out against the amendment on the floor of the House.
